Kitchen has been an integral part of home since times unknown.  People in North-Eastern India believe in having a massive kitchen and their home starts with kitchen because they strongly believe that it is auspicious to welcome guests to their home via kitchen as a part of their warm hospitality. Earlier having a luxurious kitchen was a dream. The kitchen was just limited to a space where one could cook back then. There was no proper storage in kitchen, no shelving. Groceries and vegetables were stored in big drums. However, with the advent of globalization, mixing of cultures of different countries and following the west, there was a conspicuous change in the standard of living. Which can be blatantly seen in homes now. The quality of life has improved. The biggest example could be your own home. You must have noticed the gradual change and evolution of your kitchen, in terms of design and architecture. There could be a separate kitchen or you can make kitchen a part of your home especially living room by having an open kitchen with dining space, leading to your living room.

Whether separate or open kitchen there has been a remarkable transformation in styling the kitchen space. People now are shifting more and more towards modern or modular kitchen. There is shelving, chimney, gas, refrigerator and ample of storing space for kitchen utensils and groceries. Modern kitchens have gained popularity because of simple reasons – more convenient, neater and cleaner, apart from being a symbol of style statement.  You must have keenly observed that storage plays a vital role in making of a strong kitchen. Good storage means systematic kitchen, which insures easier and comfortable cooking. There are basically two major kind of storage in kitchen – open shelves and closed shelves.

Closed shelves or drawers are a very common form of storage found in most of the homes. The reason being the shelves remains clean from dirt as they are closed. Closed shelving is generally observed with the kitchen platform, at the lower side to be precise. However, those who do not have a luxury of big kitchen spaces generally go for open shelving on the walls to save up foot space. Open shelves above the kitchen platforms are super convenient as you do not have to bend down over and over again to reach out to ingredients or utensils. You can even get chance to flaunt the beautiful storage jars in open shelves, just keeping them clean and maintenance is a task. And a few blessed one’s go for a smarter option of storage which includes a combination of open and closed shelves in different parts of the kitchen. For example – closed shelves or drawers below the kitchen platform and open shelves above the refrigerator or adjacent to the kitchen window.

Whichever style of storage you go for make sure it reflects your persona and also the overall style and design of your home. Make sure it is convenient, comfortable, easy to use and accessible for a stress free cooking.
