5 Awesome Things You Can Make to Improve Your Home

Picnic table

I’m always looking for ways to improve my home. Home improvement helps you personalize your living space by incorporating accessories for aesthetic value as well as for everyday convenience. There are numerous DIY projects that can help you improve your home. Today, we’ll take a look at 5 awesome things you can make to improve your home.

  1. Porch Swing: A porch swing can be a fantastic addition to your home. Just imagine yourself sitting there on a lazy morning with your favorite book and a nice cup of coffee or tea, and just relax. Your kids will definitely be glad to have an outdoor sitting area where they can swing back and forth, have fun and make lasting memories.

When done properly, a porch swing adds to the beauty of your home, and you’ll be glad to learn that you can easily build one yourself. You only need simple tools that you can easily find at a fair price. If you don’t already own a circular saw, make sure to do some research before buying one.

The tools you will need for this project are:

    • Tape measure
    • Speed square
    • Pencil
    • Drill
    • Circular Saw
    • Sander
    • Drill Bit Set
    • Kreg Jig

You can find simple plans online to help you build your porch swing, just Google it! If you decide to add this accessory to your porch and carry out the project to completion, it will give you a great sense of accomplishment and you’ll soon find yourself searching for your next project. Well, at least, that’s what happened in my case.

  2. Wooden Planter Boxes: Wooden planter boxes are one of my favorite things to have at home. I like that I can plant my flowers, vegetables, and herbs, and place them in strategic places around my home. Wooden planter boxes will give you both beauty and functionality because they also do a lot to add to the appeal of your home.

Building a wooden planter box is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your home. It is a fun DIY project and if you are a beginner woodworker, you can choose a simple straight-cut design without complicated corners. You can even add wheels to your planter box to help you move it around your home easily!

You will need the following set of tools to help you build the wooden planter box. Most are pretty basic tools, but there are some specialized power tools, like the table and miter saws, and the brad nailer. Remember to do your research before going out shopping!

    • Tape measure
    • Speed square
    • Eye protection glasses
    • Earplugs
    • Table saw
    • Miter saw
    • Nail gun
    • Rubber mallet
    • Kreg jig
    • Drill
    • Brad Nailer
    • Sander
  3. Picnic table: A picnic table is a great addition to the home. Building your own picnic table is cheaper than buying one and it can be a nice family project, too. Before building your picnic table, consider how many people you’d like it to accommodate. You’ll only need a single day to build a table from where you can enjoy a relaxed time with your family. That’s right, a single day!

What I love about DIY projects is that they give you the liberty to tweak elements of a project such as the size and finish, to suit your specific requirements. Keep in mind that you can also combine elements from two or more designs when choosing your own picnic table design.

Here is a list of the tools you will need to build a picnic table:

    • Tape measure
    • Pencil
    • A spacer
    • Miter saw
    • Drill
    • Drill bit
    • Hammer
    • Wood chisel
    • Clamps
    • Sander
  4. Shelves Under Stairs: If you are in need of some extra storage space in your home, you can build a few shelves under the stairs and take advantage of the unused space. Having shelves under the stairs will transform your living area into an appealing space. You can use the shelves to store just about anything that’ll fit there; books, cutlery, decorative items, picture frames, board games or even kids’ play items.

The new space will help you declutter other areas of your home. You can easily build your own shelves without having to engage a contractor. Building your own will save you money, and it’s a project that you can do with your family.

The tools you’ll need to build under-the-stairs shelves are quite common, but keep in mind that you’ll also need a reciprocating saw:

    • Tape measure
    • Pencil
    • Carpenter’s level
    • Protective eyeglasses
    • Reciprocating saw
    • Drill
    • Screwdriver

  5. Hammock: Another awesome thing you can do to improve your home is to build a hammock, where you can lay and relax. Personally, I prefer to have a hammock in my garden surrounded by flowers and trees. If you prefer to have an indoor hammock, you can look for the perfect space inside your home such as next to a window for a good view, or in the bedroom as an alternative bed.

This is also a perfect project for a father and child to do together, so you can have a place to lay together, read stories, and just create wonderful memories of you spending time with your children.

A hammock is one of the easiest DIY projects you can do. You need very few materials and you will have an amazing accessory at a minimal cost. You will need a set of tools that you can find easily which include:

    • Tape measure
    • Drill
    • Circular saw
    • Screwdriver
    • Socket wrench
    • Small leverage bar
    • 1″ spade bit
